If you were to write a soundtrack for your Orbiting Jupiter movie, which songs (3-4) would you chose and why did you chose them?
If I were to write a soundtrack for Orbiting Jupiter, I would choose songs that are serious and sad, because it will match the majority of the events in the book so far. The first song I chose is I Miss You by Avril Lavigne, then Warrior by Demi Lovato, and finally Sad Song by We The Kings.
If I were to write a soundtrack for the Orbiting Jupiter movie, the first song I would pick is I Miss You by Avril Lavigne. I would pick this song because this is a slow song that has many lyrics that relate to the events in the book. I think that this song relates to how strongly Joseph feels for Madeline, and how he misses her deeply. The first lyrics in the song are “I miss you, miss you so bad” This could be about how much Joseph misses Madeline. Joseph means so much to Madeline and the way he talks about her makes it very believable that he truly loves her, despite others thinking that they don’t know what love is because they are just kids. Joseph always talks about Madeline and tells people about her, even when he’s just milking Rosy. He also traveled a long way just to see Madeline only to be told that he should leave. The next lyrics are “I don’t forget you, oh it’s so sad” which relates to how heartbroken and depressed Joseph felt when he found out that Madeline had passed away after giving birth to their baby, and that he’s never going to forget her. He’s never going to forget her since he fell in love with her and was very close with her, and he loves Jupiter, their child. Part of the chorus of the song is “The day you slipped away is the day I found it won’t be the same”. This could be talking about how Joseph realized that the day Madeline passed away or slipped away, he knew that it wouldn’t be the same without her. This is because he talks about her all the time and he means so much to her. He knew it wouldn’t be the same because he wanted to see her again and had hope that someday, they would end up together with Jupiter. It won’t be the same because now he knows that he will never get to dance with her or hold her hand ever again. The next lyrics are “I didn’t get around to kiss you goodbye on the hand.” This could relate to how Joseph felt that he never got to say goodbye to Madeline before she passed away, or even before they got separated after Madeline got pregnant. After, it says “I wish that I could see you again, I know that I can’t” Joseph obviously wants to see Madeline again. He misses her so much and finding out that she has died has made it even worse for him. He knows he can’t see her again but he is going to have a hard time accepting that he can’t. The lyrics “I had my wake up, won’t you wake up, I keep asking why.” could be related to how Joseph is thinking. He had his wake up could mean that he opened up to Jack and his parents and told people how he wanted to find Madeline and Jupiter, so he woke up and started trying to find them instead of just wishing that it would happen. “Won’t you wake up” could be something that Joseph says to Madeline, hoping that she will somehow wake up and be okay again. This is why I think that the song I Miss You relates to some of the events in this novel very well and would be a very good fit for a song in the soundtrack.
The next song I chose for the soundtrack in the movie Orbiting Jupiter is the song Warrior by Demi Lovato. I picked this song for the movie because it relates to Joseph and how he has become a stronger person. It is also a sad and slow song, which relates to the seriousness of the movie. The first lyrics of this song are “This is a story that I have never told, I gotta get this off my chest to let it go.” This could relate to how Joseph was very quiet and kept everything to himself at the start of the book, but he finally opened up to Jack and his parents and got it off his chest. He told them everything about Madeline and Jupiter. Jack said that he told them “everything. Everything.” so he was emphasizing that Joseph really did fully open up to them even though he was quiet and uncomfortable talking to anyone before. He has never told that story to anyone because it is very important to him and it isn’t something that he wants a lot of people to know. The next words in the song are “I need to take back the light inside you stole.” This could mean a lot of different things depending on how you interpret the song, but if this song was about how Joseph feels, it could be about the weird pill that Joseph took. It could be about how the pill stole the light inside of Joseph, because it messed him up and made him make a very bad decision, which changed his life. This could steal his light, by stealing his happiness because of the bad things that happened like how he tried to kill a teacher. A lot of the lyrics in the song say something about how someone or something was a criminal. This could be using a metaphor for how the pill and the people that kept Joseph away from Madeline steal his happiness. Part of the words in the chorus are “I’m a warrior, I’ve got thicker skin.” I think that this relates to Joseph and his feelings because since he has taken a weird pill that caused bad things to happen and change his life, he has gotten stronger, almost like a warrior. Joseph has been through alot, and he has been strong enough to fight through it alI, so this is why he is like a warrior. I think he has been very strong throughout the book both mentally and physically. Saying that he has thicker skin means that things that happen to him don’t affect him as much because he expects something bad to happen. For example, he doesn’t like anyone behind him because of his past experiences, he’s scared but it does make him more prepared. I think that telling people about Madeline and Jupiter is a very strong thing to do because of how hard it must be to get the courage to talk about it in front of anyone. This is why I think that this song would be a good fit for the events and the mood of the book.
The last song I chose for the soundtrack in Orbiting Jupiter is the song Sad song by We The Kings. I picked this song because it is slow paced and relates to Joseph and Madeline’s life and feelings. The mood of the song is mostly sad because of the tempo and the lyrics. The first lyrics of the song describe how it feels to be connected and close with someone very important to you. Saying “You and I, we’re like fireworks and symphonies exploding in the sky.” means that two people are so in love and happy when they are together. This is the same as how Madeline and Joseph feel when they are together. One time they felt this way is when they were dancing together. The lyrics “So stop time right here in the moonlight, cause I don’t ever wanna close my eyes” relates to how Joseph didn’t want to close his eyes when he was with Madeline. This is because he didn’t want to miss anything and he loved looking at her. When the words mention stopping time in the moonlight, it relates to the sky and how it is night time. You can see Jupiter and night, and that was Madeline and Joseph’s favourite planet, which they also named their child after because of how much they loved it. The chorus says “Without you I feel broke, like I’m half of a whole. Without you, I have no hand to hold.” This is about how Madeline completes Joseph in a way that no one else can, and he isn’t in love with anyone else other than her. It represents how strongly they feel for each other and for their baby Jupiter, and how much he still wants to find his child and watch her grow up, despite people telling him that he is not fit for being a parent at only 13. I think this song is a good fit for the movie Orbiting Jupiter because of the lyrics that match the events and the mood of the song.
Overall, I think the songs I Miss You by Avril Lavigne, Warrior by Demi Lovato, and Sad song by We The Kings are good fits for the soundtrack of the movie Orbiting Jupiter because of the mood of the song and the lyrics relating to events in the story.
