In my opinion, I think that Clay Jensen from Thirteen Reasons Why is a very good character. I think this because he is a character that a lot of people can relate to, he says things that are memorable, and he has a personality that keeps people interested in him. The first reason that Clay is a good character is because people can relate to him. In Thirteen Reasons Why, he is always very distracted by the thoughts he has and it affects his whole life. Listening to the tapes and thinking about what he did to kill Hannah Baker is always taking over him. I think that a lot of people can relate to this because it has a connection to mental health. In flashbacks to when Hannah was alive, Clay seemed to be normal. But after Hannah killed herself, he has never been happy. People can relate to this because everyone has had problems that they always keep thinking about, even if they don't want to. Their problems sometimes distract them from things they do in their daily life. Another reason that Clay Jensen is a good character is because he says thinks that people tend to remember. One of the quotes that Clay said in the series was "It has to get better. The way we look out for each other and treat each other. It has to get better somehow." This relates to bullying and can be memorable for someone who is a bully or is being bullied, or just notices that the way society works could be improved. I think that this is an important feature for Clay to have because if someone says something that speaks to you and means something to you, you usually remember the person who said it. The last reason that I think Clay is a good character is because of his personality. Characters in movies and tv shows usually have very strong personalities that make people like them. They could have traits like being humorous or not being very bright. I think that Clay could be mysterious and risk taking. One of the ways that he has proved this is when Hannah said on the tapes to do nothing more and nothing less than what she says to do. But Clay has taken risks and gone beyond what she said to do like when he confronts the people that Hannah's tapes are about. Overall, Clay Jensen from Thirteen Reasons Why is one of the best characters.
The Healthy Eating at School organization increase healthy eating in schools. It gives parents, students and teachers ideas on how to encourage healthy eating like having more access to vending machines with healthy food choices in them, and parents giving there children milk or water to drink. This organization would help students to make healthier choices by motivating them to eat better, giving them the benefits that can come from it and the disadvantages that can come from making bad food choices.
Question: Does the community you live in encourage people to make bad food choices, and does it have an impact on the way you eat?
Habit 3 - Putting First things First
The habit of putting first things first is about putting your top priorities first, and taking care of them before you do anything else. It is when you set aside the unimportant tasks, and focus on the main things that are most important. Putting first things first could impact my grade 8 year because it applies to getting schoolwork done, and also physical and mental health. For example, the ability to do homework instead of watching tv is important because you know the difference between what is a top priority and what isn't. This habit is helpful because it allows you to get things done, and keep up with your homework. The habit also helps with keeping yourself happy and healthy. If you are very unhappy or you think you are unhealthy, this is important and needs to be put before almost all of your other tasks because if you aren't physically or mentally healthy, it affects every other aspect of your life.
Question: How can you tell the difference between something that is important and something that isn't?
James is a grade 8 boy that moved towns and needed to switch schools in the middle of the year. The school has made him very stressed out and he doesn’t want to be friends with any of the kids. The stress even caused him to verbally abuse his bus driver.
A strategy for James to use for his stress about the changes in his life is to open up to someone instead of keeping it to himself, or letting it out in the wrong way. If James isn’t happy, a good thing to do is to talk to a family member or someone that he trusts, and talk about his feelings. Keeping his emotions to himself would make him feel very alone, and they would all build up and eventually he would do something that he would regret, which he already did. When he lashed out on his bus driver, that was all of his emotions that he has held inside exploding at one time. This probably wouldn’t have happened if he had let his emotions out in a healthy way by talking about them. Even if the person he confides in doesn’t have any advice, it will make him feel better knowing that someone is there to listen. Sometimes it’s also easier to talk to a stranger about your problems than a relative. So there is also and option of James asking to have therapy, so he can talk about his situation with someone that will only know the story from his point of view and professionally trained to help out people in situations like these.
If you were James, would you speak out about your problems before they get worse?
Hey Rachel! Have you been enjoying the book so far? I like that it is based on people around our age so events in the novel are more relatable. Why do you think that the first time Joseph smiled and laughed was when he was just shoveling snow with Jack? Is shoveling snow that important to him or is there something more meaningful behind it?
If you were to write a soundtrack for your Orbiting Jupiter movie, which songs (3-4) would you chose and why did you chose them?
If I were to write a soundtrack for Orbiting Jupiter, I would choose songs that are serious and sad, because it will match the majority of the events in the book so far. The first song I chose is I Miss You by Avril Lavigne, then Warrior by Demi Lovato, and finally Sad Song by We The Kings.
If I were to write a soundtrack for the Orbiting Jupiter movie, the first song I would pick is I Miss You by Avril Lavigne. I would pick this song because this is a slow song that has many lyrics that relate to the events in the book. I think that this song relates to how strongly Joseph feels for Madeline, and how he misses her deeply. The first lyrics in the song are “I miss you, miss you so bad” This could be about how much Joseph misses Madeline. Joseph means so much to Madeline and the way he talks about her makes it very believable that he truly loves her, despite others thinking that they don’t know what love is because they are just kids. Joseph always talks about Madeline and tells people about her, even when he’s just milking Rosy. He also traveled a long way just to see Madeline only to be told that he should leave. The next lyrics are “I don’t forget you, oh it’s so sad” which relates to how heartbroken and depressed Joseph felt when he found out that Madeline had passed away after giving birth to their baby, and that he’s never going to forget her. He’s never going to forget her since he fell in love with her and was very close with her, and he loves Jupiter, their child. Part of the chorus of the song is “The day you slipped away is the day I found it won’t be the same”. This could be talking about how Joseph realized that the day Madeline passed away or slipped away, he knew that it wouldn’t be the same without her. This is because he talks about her all the time and he means so much to her. He knew it wouldn’t be the same because he wanted to see her again and had hope that someday, they would end up together with Jupiter. It won’t be the same because now he knows that he will never get to dance with her or hold her hand ever again. The next lyrics are “I didn’t get around to kiss you goodbye on the hand.” This could relate to how Joseph felt that he never got to say goodbye to Madeline before she passed away, or even before they got separated after Madeline got pregnant. After, it says “I wish that I could see you again, I know that I can’t” Joseph obviously wants to see Madeline again. He misses her so much and finding out that she has died has made it even worse for him. He knows he can’t see her again but he is going to have a hard time accepting that he can’t. The lyrics “I had my wake up, won’t you wake up, I keep asking why.” could be related to how Joseph is thinking. He had his wake up could mean that he opened up to Jack and his parents and told people how he wanted to find Madeline and Jupiter, so he woke up and started trying to find them instead of just wishing that it would happen. “Won’t you wake up” could be something that Joseph says to Madeline, hoping that she will somehow wake up and be okay again. This is why I think that the song I Miss You relates to some of the events in this novel very well and would be a very good fit for a song in the soundtrack.
The next song I chose for the soundtrack in the movie Orbiting Jupiter is the song Warrior by Demi Lovato. I picked this song for the movie because it relates to Joseph and how he has become a stronger person. It is also a sad and slow song, which relates to the seriousness of the movie. The first lyrics of this song are “This is a story that I have never told, I gotta get this off my chest to let it go.” This could relate to how Joseph was very quiet and kept everything to himself at the start of the book, but he finally opened up to Jack and his parents and got it off his chest. He told them everything about Madeline and Jupiter. Jack said that he told them “everything. Everything.” so he was emphasizing that Joseph really did fully open up to them even though he was quiet and uncomfortable talking to anyone before. He has never told that story to anyone because it is very important to him and it isn’t something that he wants a lot of people to know. The next words in the song are “I need to take back the light inside you stole.” This could mean a lot of different things depending on how you interpret the song, but if this song was about how Joseph feels, it could be about the weird pill that Joseph took. It could be about how the pill stole the light inside of Joseph, because it messed him up and made him make a very bad decision, which changed his life. This could steal his light, by stealing his happiness because of the bad things that happened like how he tried to kill a teacher. A lot of the lyrics in the song say something about how someone or something was a criminal. This could be using a metaphor for how the pill and the people that kept Joseph away from Madeline steal his happiness. Part of the words in the chorus are “I’m a warrior, I’ve got thicker skin.” I think that this relates to Joseph and his feelings because since he has taken a weird pill that caused bad things to happen and change his life, he has gotten stronger, almost like a warrior. Joseph has been through alot, and he has been strong enough to fight through it alI, so this is why he is like a warrior. I think he has been very strong throughout the book both mentally and physically. Saying that he has thicker skin means that things that happen to him don’t affect him as much because he expects something bad to happen. For example, he doesn’t like anyone behind him because of his past experiences, he’s scared but it does make him more prepared. I think that telling people about Madeline and Jupiter is a very strong thing to do because of how hard it must be to get the courage to talk about it in front of anyone. This is why I think that this song would be a good fit for the events and the mood of the book.
The last song I chose for the soundtrack in Orbiting Jupiter is the song Sad song by We The Kings. I picked this song because it is slow paced and relates to Joseph and Madeline’s life and feelings. The mood of the song is mostly sad because of the tempo and the lyrics. The first lyrics of the song describe how it feels to be connected and close with someone very important to you. Saying “You and I, we’re like fireworks and symphonies exploding in the sky.” means that two people are so in love and happy when they are together. This is the same as how Madeline and Joseph feel when they are together. One time they felt this way is when they were dancing together. The lyrics “So stop time right here in the moonlight, cause I don’t ever wanna close my eyes” relates to how Joseph didn’t want to close his eyes when he was with Madeline. This is because he didn’t want to miss anything and he loved looking at her. When the words mention stopping time in the moonlight, it relates to the sky and how it is night time. You can see Jupiter and night, and that was Madeline and Joseph’s favourite planet, which they also named their child after because of how much they loved it. The chorus says “Without you I feel broke, like I’m half of a whole. Without you, I have no hand to hold.” This is about how Madeline completes Joseph in a way that no one else can, and he isn’t in love with anyone else other than her. It represents how strongly they feel for each other and for their baby Jupiter, and how much he still wants to find his child and watch her grow up, despite people telling him that he is not fit for being a parent at only 13. I think this song is a good fit for the movie Orbiting Jupiter because of the lyrics that match the events and the mood of the song.
Overall, I think the songs I Miss You by Avril Lavigne, Warrior by Demi Lovato, and Sad song by We The Kings are good fits for the soundtrack of the movie Orbiting Jupiter because of the mood of the song and the lyrics relating to events in the story.
David Lyons would be a good actor for the role of Joseph’s dad. He has been nominated for many awards that include the most popular new male talent in 2007 and a LAIUFF award for the best actor in 2014. I think that David would be a perfect fit for this part because Joseph’s dad is rude and abusive. David Lyons plays parts in other movies that are similar to Joseph’s dad’s personality. Some of the movies that David Lyons have been in are Safe Haven and Storm Warning. Joseph’s dad has abused Joseph in the past, and in all of these movies David Lyons has played a part that has had a personality similar to Joseph’s dad. For example, in Safe Haven, David Lyons plays the role of Kevin Tierney. In the movie, a woman named Erin flees her house in Boston by getting a bus that will take her out of town, and changes her name to Katie. She reaches a small town in Southport, North Carolina, and starts a relationship with a man named Alex. In Boston, a police detective makes wanted posters for a woman that has supposedly committed murder, named Erin. Alex sees the photo of Erin and realizes that it looks exactly like Katie, which starts a big fight. After the fight is over, Katie decides to open up to Alex and tell him that she left Boston because her husband named Kevin was abusing her. Later on, the police detective turned out to be Erin’s abusive husband. Kevin is a bad alcoholic which make his issues a lot worse. Similar to Joseph’s dad, he abuses someone who he is really supposed to love and protect. In the movie Storm Warning, a couple gets lost at sea and ends up on an island where they find a house that appears to be abandoned. But soon enough, the homeowners Brett, his brother Jimmy (David Lyons) and their father Poppy return. They trap the couple and make them sure of the fact that they have no intention of letting them out alive. David plays the role of Jimmy which is described as a deranged redneck. Deranged means mad and insane, which also describes Joseph’s dad. In these movies he looks psychopathic and crazy, so I know that he will have an appearance that will be similar to the ways then many people picture Joseph’s dad when reading about him.
For the role of Joseph, I would cast Chandler Riggs. He is 17, but is short enough that he could pass off as Joseph’s age, which is 14. He has won 6 awards from 2012 to 2016 which include an award for the best performance by a young actor in a television series, and overall best performance in a tv series. Chandler has been in multiples movies, including the movie Mercy. The movie Mercy is about a mother and her two sons George (Chandler Riggs) and Buddy, going to help take care of their grand mother who has mystical powers. Judging by the plot and the cover of the movie, it seems that it is very serious and would not fit into the comedy section of movie genres. Joseph’s personality is serious and quiet as he doesn’t open up at all to anyone at the start of the book. A television series that Chandler Riggs has been in is The Walking Dead. He plays the role of Carl Grimes. Carl Grimes is a main character in the show and survived the outbreak. During the outbreak, he believe that his father was dead. His mother and him travel to a refugee camp, and as time goes on he becomes more quiet and sad because of his loss. During the first season of the show, Carl is portrayed as a shy and reserved boy. He also shows signs of being scared of bad things happening around him and goes to his parents for comfort. In the second season, Carl is less frightened of the world around him. I think this can relate to Joseph because at first he kept things to himself and was very quiet, but as time went on he became less frightened and started to open up more. He told Jack and his parents all about Jupiter and Madeline. Both of the characters Joseph and Carl Grimes have had a cruel past that has mentally hurt them very badly. They are very similar and this is why I think that Chandler Riggs would be perfect for the part of Joseph. Chandler is best known for playing big roles in horror movies. This is why he would be a good fit for the role of Joseph because if I picked someone that is a comedic actor, the viewers would have a hard time picturing Joseph with a serious and shy personality because he is known for being funny is his other films.
If I were to cast an actor for the role of Jack, I would choose Tenzing Trainor. Tenzing is a 15 year old actor who is very short for his age, and noticeably younger compared to Chandler Riggs. This is a good thing because in the book Orbiting Jupiter, Joseph is two years older than Jack. a popular television series that Tenzing has starred in is the show Liv and Maddie. He plays the role of Parker Rooney, Liv and Maddie Rooney’s younger brother. Parker tends to be quite adventurous, courageous, and brave. He usually behaves older than he is when he is with his friends and family. This relates to Jack because he has been around Joseph a lot since he has joined the family, and Joseph has taught him a few tricks and tips like how to throw a stone the right way. I think that Jack pays attention to some of Joseph’s skills and learns new things from him, whether they are negative things or positive. In the series, Parker appears to be very close with his older brother, Joey Rooney. In the book Orbiting Jupiter, Jack tries to spend a lot of time with Joseph to become closer with him, since they are now step brothers. One of things Jack did to show that he cared and wanted to get closer with Joseph is when Joseph refused to get onto the bus. The bus driver was being rude to Joseph, so he wouldn’t get onto the bus. He started walking to school even though it was freezing. Instead of getting on the bus and having a warm ride to school, Jack decided to walk with Joseph. Tenzing Trainor has also been a voice actor for the movie Super Buddies. Super Buddies is a fun-filled adventure movie. He plays Buddha, one of the five dogs that have special superpowers. Their job is to protect the rings from an extraterrestrial, but they soon learn that they don’t need to have superpowers to be superheroes. This is obviously an inspirational movie with the puppies being friendly and excited.
I If I were to cast an actor for the gym teacher in Orbiting Jupiter, I would choose The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) mostly because of his appearance. He is a great actor and has been nominated for more than twenty awards for his acting skills. The first person I picture when I think of a muscular actor is Dwayne Johnson, because of his athletic abilities and how muscular he is. I think that he would be a perfect fit for this role because a stereotypical gym teacher would have big muscles and would be extremely strong. Aside from his appearance, I think that it is important for him to be able to be able to act well when acting with children. One of the movies that Dwayne has been in is the movie Game Plan. In the movie, he plays Joe Kingman. He is the main character along with Madison Pettis that plays 8 year old Peyton Kelly. Throughout the whole movie, Joe and Peyton are together and become closer to each other and love each other. This is a great example of how well The Rock can show that he is good with kids. Being a gym teacher, you have to teach kids and handle all of the trouble that they can cause. In Game Plan, Peyton causes trouble for Joe because he is not used to taking care of a kid and handling the problems. In the movie, Peyton has an allergic reaction to the nuts in a dessert she was eating. Joe rushed her to the hospital and handled the situation properly. In the book Orbiting Jupiter, Mr. Switech the gym teacher noticed that Joseph was very athletically skilled. Mr. Switech did not judge Joseph for his past of trying to kill a teacher, and he treated him like a normal human being.
As an audience member of the book Orbiting Jupiter, do you think Joseph's character has changed from chapter 1 to chapter 2?
As an audience member to the book, Orbiting Jupiter I think Joseph's character has changed a lot from chapter one to chapter two. One of the reasons I think this is because in chapter one, he didn't answer people when when they spoke to him or include himself in conversations, I think this was because he was getting used to his new home and the other big changes that he was going through in his life. In chapter two, he talks to people more and it might be because he is getting more used to his new home, new school, and new way of living. He has also started talking to Jack more since they walk to school together every day. Joseph might like that he has Jack as someone who doesn't think of him as a guy who tried to killed a teacher or other bad labels that students and teachers could have placed on him because of his past. In chapter two, a teacher named Mr. D'ulney started giving Joseph math questions every day. Mr. D'ulney did this because he noticed that Joseph was really good at math and didn't want to ignore the quality that he saw in him. I think that if Mr. D'ulney did this in chapter one, Joseph might not try to answer the question at all because he was uncomfortable since it was early in the school year, and Joseph could've thought that Mr. D'ulney thought he was dumb because of the bad choices he made in his past and wanted to test it out. But in chapter two, Joseph always completes the math question and returns it to Mr. D'ulney. I think that Mr. D'ulney has made it clear to Joseph that he doesn't judge him for his past and that he sees the positive things about him. Do you think Joseph's character will change again in chapter 3?
